You appoint them. You can go to any church and get your child baptised. Make sure you go when you're about 8 months pregnant so that arrangements can be made before the baby is too old. You don't have to be an avid church goer to introduce your children to religion. Its a healthy step if you want them to have a chance to become spiritual. Give them a baptismal then let them decide if church is the place for them.

you dont have to go to church to get a godparrent... you can have anyone as a godparent but they gotta be at their birth...

I think if you are catholic-you'd need to go to a church and talk to a priest about babtism for your child? the god parents are present during the ceremony.

You can just appoint a guardian if something should happen to you. You can do this in a will.
