I have always viewed Christmas as a holiday rather than a religious event. Initially it was a time of year when we were off from school, so that it was more like vacation than it had anything to do with religion. While Christians had taken over the early Pagan winter solstice celebration, I personally never saw it as a religious event, but rather a time off from school, to be with family and to enjoy the sense of being together.
