I think it goes back to the olden days because the boys end up being responsible for taking over the farms and also because the boys are culturally required to support their elderly parents.

The girls generally brought little to the family. They were married off and pretty much that was it.

In China, this was only magnified by the one-child policy. Many more parents prefered to have that single child be a boy for these reasons.

Be happy you can live soon and live your life in a culture that doesn't share those values.

It is very frustrating in modern western society especially if your mother or both your parents are originally from China, cultural tradition is very hard to break away from and I can guarantee that your mother grew up much the same way but this does not help you with your problem - by the way when your mum or dad hit you it is physical abuse and reportable to the police - back to our problem your brother will grow into a man who will have little or no respect for women and I feel sorry for him he will never no real affection, you will eventually leave home as you are not happy with the environment so be careful with people you meet in life don't trust everybody, do you have access to a Chinese youth/teen support group that deals with these problems or can you contact a woman's support group, these suggestions are to help you find a way out and be all you can be, unfortunately I live in Australia and am unfamiliar with what is available to you. Try and survive it until you do get help don't give up

well, the thing is that sons will kinda help carry on the family surname. as for girls, they marry off and then her children's surname will be after her husband's surname. that's why chinese parents would prefer boys than girls.

and since they always think that girls will marry off and that it's a "no value possession". it's like, a son will marry a girl and the girl will "be of the son's family" whereas a girl marry a man, she will be "in the man's family".

think of it as u rear a dog until it's big and then give it away for free. then the dog will soon be a watchdog for another family during the night when people are asleep.

but then again, im a chinese too but my parents aren't like that. they are open minded and they treat everyone the same. i guess it's just the thinkings of the parents.

Well you should be glad that you live in America (if you are) Those are the old ways, some Asian parents are looking on the girls' side. The boys are responsible for the farm and money. So that is important. But i think the women's right activist in Asian countries are going to stand up to the men.. hopefully soon.... lol I'm Asian and I'm a girl too so i know what it's like. but luckily my parents are not like that... :)

Because "tradionally" boys were always valued more in the family, because they were able to go out and bring in food for the entire family while female children were expcected to stay home and tend to children and the cooking. When a family had all females there were no sons to go out and gather the food...beleive it or not back in ancient times entire families actually STARVED to death because females did not hunt or gather food. Some cultures also beleive that the male is smarter than the female. However if you will look at the french vocabulary you will see different...it is Le (male) probleme and La (female) Solution.... I rest my case...LOL

This is the traditional culture of Chinese thousands years ago. We girls are like that, depends on how are your parents, if your parents is open minded they won't do that, but some of them still accepting the old culture that's why she treats you like that. Well, sometimes my mom also do this to me but my brother will get everything he wants.

Just accept it and don't be depressed about this. Think about this is a challenge or power for you to do everything better. Do better than your brother and one day your mother will know that you're the best. Try to get someone, maybe your father to talk to her about this. Personally i don't accept parents slaps their children hardly.

Because to Chinese girls are good for nothing but making babies and boys are responsible for taking care of the family when the parents get older and actually matter.

Parents always treated boys better. My grandmother treats my uncle like a guest, like he's royalty. I'm like what is UP with that? Don't we matter too? But if you want money, work for it. Boys get spoiled if they use their parents like that. Women are more independent and sometimes, it's better to let boys get the spotlight even if you disagree.

i dont know i think thats the old traditional chinese families my fiancees family isnt like tht i thought they would freak when they found out i was white they didnt. I also thought my fiancee would not be pleased when he found out we were having a girl he was overjoyed. I think in some senses it is a stereotype because my family is not like that theyre very open minded so i think your family should keep up with the times
