.I will give you a answer beside the 2000.00 bucks
for the most part it is what the unit can hold and what the unit can do.
that is in a nut shell i guess i want to say. Some people use a cheap unit for there clothes washer some will use the bigger and better unit for there drinking water and so on.
I have been in plumbing for 20yrs and have seen them use it for everything.
The small unit when you go to recharge the system you have to do it yourself on the bigger unit it is built into the system and the system will take care of itself verse the smaller 1 does not.
Now there are some units cheap that are out there and do alot of things almost as good as the bigger unit. But then you get into more things like how much water do you use a day in your house and so on. If you use alot (Lets say 5 people taken a shower and so on) The smaller unit will not be able to keep up.
If you go to home depot go the the water softner section and they have free books that you can use to do the calculations you need to know so you will know what kind of unit to get.
(PS- I Know in Ohio and Califorina Home depots have them so your should too)
Goodluck

Well a $500.00 water softener is going to soften the water and a $2,500.00 system is going to do the same, but is the $500.00 system big enough for your house? I wouldn't imagine it would be.

That's what I've been trying to figure out. I've been offered one for five thousand (I can little afford that) over one for six hundred, so, I'll be looking for an answer also, I wish I could see yous. I don't understand all these on the market for six hundred, why buy one for an extravagant price.

$2000

It could be capacity of the softner. How much resin does it hold? Could be the maximum flow rate. Or any aditional treatment, charcoal filters etc.
