I think of a road as being rural and a street as being in town or a city.

A road is an identifiable route or path between two or more places. Roads are typically smoothed, paved, or otherwise prepared to allow easy travel; though they need not be, and historically many roads were simply recognisable routes without any formal construction or maintenance. In urban areas roads may pass along and be named as streets, serving a dual function as urban space and route.

Abbr. St. A public way or thoroughfare in a city or town, usually with a sidewalk or sidewalks.
Such a public way considered apart from the sidewalks: Don't play in the street.
A public way or road along with the houses or buildings abutting it: lives on a quiet street.

I have always wondered that myself about road, street, and avenue. The best I could come up with is that a road is less traveled than a street. Roads are mostly residential areas, while streets can be too, they are usually a more business oriented area. Hope this helps and Happy Holidays.

A road leads somewhere. A street does not, except when it is also a road.

I would associate a road more within a rural setting, whereas a street would be in an urban setting.

Nothing really.....just different suffixes. But I do believe that Boulevards and Avenues are usually larger in size.

A street is generally borded by houses. therefore you say:
in the street.
A road is generally borded open country, and you say:
on the road.
