you really don't have to do much with a new drive. I always go to the manufactures website and run the newest utility that they have to check the drive for bad sectors, etc.

if you want to use something with a GUI then look into something like Partition Magic by PowerQuest

Fdisk is the one you do from dos...actually dos is the most stable os...hence its better if you do from fdsik...
or else...connect your hdd to some other computer..and thru disk manegment createpartitions and everything..
disk manegment can be accessed from administrative tools then computer manegment...

if you are using win98 then you have to use fdisk. For newer versions like winXP, you can do repartitioning during installation using the graphics window.

Install either Linux or XP and they will allow you to partition the drive accordingly during the installation.

if you are using microsoft windows use the windows disk format tool unless you are using it as the primary in which case you would use the cd that the hdd came with.
