The major reason is that the players association negotiated more personal time for major holidays. If you'll notice they're were no games on Thanksgiving. As a result your seeing more scenarios where a team might play 4 games in 6 nights, or 7 game road trips, which up until last year was unheard of. This was leveraged also by the fact that the NBA product lacks the intrigue it once had to capture a holiday crowd as much as say, the NFL which at this time of year captures interest do to teams competing for playoff births.

It really all depends on the people who does all the schedules for the NBA.
However, this year it was only Lakers and Heat. Too bad my team lost.
Oh, and i think for atleast the next couple of years, miami and lakers will play during christmas because of the whole Kobe and Shaq thing.

It's how many games the NBA wants to schedule on that day. For the past few years, on Christmas, they've been focusing on big-name, marque matchup, like Shaq-Yao, Kobe-Shaq (though now they have to settle for Kobe-DWade), team rivalries like Pistons-Pacers, etc.
