I'll try to explain it close to layman's terms. RJ45 is the standard wiring used for computer to computer network communications. A port or rj45 socket is where you plug that wire in. It can support communication speeds over 1GBit/sec.

You can see this socket behind your computer where all the keyboard, mouse, power and other wiring connections are to be plugged in. Usually many of them have couple of green lights or a green and amber lights next to them. If wired and active, oneof them usually blinks and indicates communication.

IT should be Ethernet.

do you mean ethernet/cat-5/networking cable (looks like a large phone cord)
