I would think so. I had stereo equipment that would wear down my battery on my old 95' Tauras.
I have some advice, too. If your car is a 94, I would start looking for a newer one. You are lucky, these days, if a car last over 10 years. I now drive a 2003 Tauras.

You don't have what is any hard problem here as long as this condition was not present before the battery was replaced. If there was no problem before, the PCM has lost its memory related to fuel trim and idle data. What you need to do sounds stupid, but it was what we had to do whenever we unhooked power for any reason. You are going to have to unhook the battery again and leave the power off for at least 30 seconds. After the time has passed, reconnect the power. Now without touching the gas pedal or attempting to keep the motor running, start the motor this way. Turn the ignition on and let the PCM set its parameters so give it about 5 seconds. Start the motor, it might stall. If it does stall, just recrank and start the motor. When the motor starts, it will probably race but idle down by itself. You now have to let the motor run by itself without touching the gas pedal or doing anything else while the PCM "learns" the settings. They say you have to wait until the motor gets hot so let it run until it hits about 90 degrees C or around 200 degrees F. Then shut it off for a couple of seconds and it should be good to go. I know this sounds dumb, but I did it thousands of times.

The alternator went out cuz it was an " older mazda" and the battery cuz of the alternator. I leave my alarm on for weeks while I'm away working and never a problem with the battery. If your battery dies with an alarm it's probably time for a new battery

it puts a small load on the battery, but nothing serious. but the alternator on a 12 year old car is going to die eventually anyway. i don't think the problem with your parents van was the alarm, i think its the fact that you drive 12 year old cars. believe it or not, things go wrong with cars.
if you want a better battery, get an optima red top. should work a little better and still crank just fine in the cold.

Thier problem was with the alt. and battery, not related to the alarm system, they use so little power when activated, you wouldn't even notice it unless you had a weak battery to begin with. good luck

I'm a retired subway mechanic. The current draw would be so low there should be no problem if wired unless on ALL the time
