Travel almost any country road and you'll find an old country church sided by a cemetery and topped by a steeple. The steeple probably has a bell that was once used to call people to worship. That was before people wore watches. Steeple bells also summoned people in times of emergency.

Cities in the United States also bristle with steeples, though most of the urban spires are more ornate than their country cousins.

A steeple, which identifies a building as a church, can be spotted from a distance. That's one reason why steeples were first put on churches. People would look for a steeple in a town or village and use it as a marker to guide them to the church.

The same reason they're historically placed on hilltops...So they can be seen from far, far away and are closer to heaven, perhaps like an antenna of sorts.
