It depends on what you're trying to protect your laptop from. If it's just viruses, then yeah, an anti-virus is sufficient.
However, if you are using a wireless connection/router and want to protect your laptop from hackers, then an anti-virus will do nothing to protect you from hackers. When I say hackers I don't mean computer geniuses...I mean anyone that has access to your network. That can include your next door neighbor. They may be logging onto your wireless network and not even know it. A lot of people out there don't understand how their wireless network functions.
I'm using Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security (it came with my laptop). It's nice because if you're on a wireless connection it has an interface that allows you to detect if someone else is connecting to your network.

To be honest with you Norton is not the best program to be using though mine came with the same thing installed on it. I have come to find out mine is a very new version though I'm not sure about yours but anyways it seems to be working very well for me I havent had any problems so far.... dont ever use Mcafee it tends to make your computer start up very slow and run slower also. Panda is the best virus protector out there. And about the firewall Zone Alarm Pro is a very good firewall. But then again if you are using Windows XP the firewall on it is very good but not as good as Zone Alarm Pro. If you would want any of them programs get them at www.downloads.com Hope this helps.

Norton anti-virus protects you ONLY from viruses and some trojans, so you also require an additional firewall and two anti-spyware. All of theses are free and good:
AdAware SE: http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
Spyware Terminator: http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download/CPF_Setup_2.0.0.1.exe
SOME SECURITY TIPS à
1.Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. So, don't activate the embedded anti-virus that comes along with Spyware Terminator, if you do get it. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish.
2.Always keep the real time scanning/resident shield of your anti-virus and any one of your anti-spyware active, especially while downloading something from file sharing networks.
3.Keep all your security software updated, and scan your computer for spyware every 1 week and for viruses every 2 weeks.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!

If you don't have a secured wireless network, you will need a virus scanner and a firewall. . . . . I suggest AntiVir Virus Scanner, and for the firewall, i'd use Trend-Micro.
