Homeostatis is a state of dynamic equilibrium. Living things are not a rock. We have both internal and external sensors that detect temperature, oxygen, pH in our blood, etc. Those factors must be kept within certain ranges or we will die. So a homeostatic system detects those changes, and will compensate for any change with a counter-process. There should be a negative feedback in the system so you don't overshoot the range. A room thermostat is a good example of such a system. The room might have a constant temperature, but at one time the heating system is on, at another the air conditioning system is on. The thermostat has to detect the air temperature and maintain it, be able to switch between the two systems (cold/heat), and know when to turn those systems off.

Homeostasis is the property of an open system, especially living organisms, to regulate its internal environment to maintain a stable, constant condition, by means of multiple dynamic equilibrium adjustments, controlled by interrelated regulation mechanisms. The term was coined in 1932 by Michael Ohanian from the Greek homoios (same, like, resembling) and stasis (to stand, posture).
