How do i give a code to buyers to have access to my product?

Please i wish to have some product for sale in my site ,but i do not want people to have access to them until they pay.My question is after they must have paid i will want to give them a code to access the product how do i give each of my customers different codes to be able to access my products?

do like we use to do when i worked in medical records. start a number like 1001 and 1002 and so on just keep adding upwards and they will have different numbers. but i would give one customer for all items just one number. ( like if they but 6 items give them the number 1001 for all items and so on with the next.
