It was a compromise. The compromise was between the people who thought each state should get one vote in electing a president, and the people who thought that each states vote should be proportional to its population.

Obviously, it you were from a state with a small population, you would be for the first position. If you were from a populous state, you would be making the case for proportional vote.

Remember, the president presides over the states, not the American people. Wouldn't you think that people would learn this in school?

The electoral college was set up as a compromise in Congress. Some members wanted the President elected by a popular vote, others by Congress. Remember in those days most people were not very politically savvy. So the idea was, the people would choose electors that would best represent their interests. These electors would then go to Washington D.C. and they would in turn vote for the best candidate that they felt would represent the people that elected them.

I think it was good idea for the time, but it really isn't needed any longer.
