The Taliban was the government of Afghanistan (Now a rebel group trying to regain power). They originally overthrew a number of warlords that ran Afghanistan after the fall of the communist regime.
Al-Qaeda is a terrorist organization that may or may not exist today (Experts disagree). It was a loosely based network of training camps and religious schools that trained young men into militia warfare, terrorism and gave them an extremist islamist education. The Al-Qaeda network was also based in Afghanistan; they were guests of both the warlords and the later Taliban.
The United States overthrew the Taliban government when it refused to hand over suspected al-Qaeda members, in particular Osama bin Laden.
Hope this clarifies things. Merry Christmas.

Al Qaeda is a global threat & their area of operations can be anywhere in the world. The Taliban operates only in Pakistan & Afghanistan.

However, both are extremist groups.
