Maybe they never had a father to teach them kindness - back in their days as kids, most fathers were even worse than the ones some lucky kids know now. But if they've only ever known cruelty, then... well, it's the same with a pet - if they know only kindness and love, it's what they'll become; if they know only cruelty and anger, that's what they'll become.

Fathers are not mean to their sons all the time. Specific fathers will be mean, but they do not do so because they are fathers. They do so because they are jerks.

Because they do not know what love is. A father who loves his children would never intentionally say anything to put them down. Your father needs to learn to love, before he can love you. You need to learn to love, before you will be able to love anyone.
