Uhh, what are the other options? Happy Christmas? I've never understood the people that say "Happy Christmas". Merry means Jolly. Jolly means happy. & do I have to explain what happy means? I suppose I just answered my own misunderstanding. Merry=Happy. Merry & Happy christmas are the same. I personally like Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas!

Because it's nice and polite to wish a merry or happy Christmas to someone else, it's a holiday, when you're supposed to celebrate the nativity of JesusChrist, and for those who dont believe, it's a day you spend with your family and friends and celebrate just to be alive and have fun.
Is it wrong to wish happiness for someone else?

As opposed to...what? Happy Christmas?
Guess it just sounds better..
Sorta like "gay apparel"...
Maybe the phrase was just developed when the word "Merry" was very commonly used as something very positive and joyous.

Because it's still a bit early to say "Happy New Year" instead.
