It commemorates the Maccabis, who led the smaller Jewish army in a fight to take back their temple which had be desecrated by the Syrian-Greeks. The smaller Maccabi army defeated the greeks and when they went to restore the temple they found they did not have enough oil to rekindle the temple lamp (menorah). they only found enough oil for one day. this oil lasted 8 days, the amount of time it took to make new oil, and that is y hannukah is celebrated for 8 days as opposed to one.

Hanukkah is also known as the festival of lights. It is a celebration of a victory by Judas Maccabees and followers against the Greeks and Syrians and the re-dedication of the temple in Jerusalem afterwards. One of the Greek Generals had defiled the temple by placing an idol of the god Zeus in the temple, sacrificing a pig to Zeus and compelling the elders of each town and village to do the same. When they wanted to rededicate the temple only 1 days worth of the special oil was found, but God miraculously allowed the oil to last 8 days in the Menorah -the time necessary to make more of the special oil.

Hannukah is an eight-day Jewish holiday that starts on the 25th day of Kislev, which may be in December, late November, or, while very rare in occasion, early January (as was the case for the Hanukkah of 2005–2006). The festival is observed in Jewish homes by the kindling of lights on each of the festival's eight nights, one on the first night, two on the second, and so on.

Merry Christmas! ^_^
