Why is everyone so afraid of the draft? I have been in the military for six years now. I have been to Iraq and Afganistan. I've seen things that I wished I hadn't, but I did it all for my country. People never cease to amaze me in this country. They cry about freedoms and liberties and expect everything to be handed to them freely. Freedom is not free. Us people of the US military give that freedom to you and fight to defend it. The least you can do is be proud to serve your country and protect the liberties of your children. But, as soon as there is a hint of maybe the draft being re-enacted, everyone acts as if it is the worst thing possible. Talks of class action suits and dodging the draft make me sick. Serve your country...be proud of it...ensure your kids have a free country like you do.

I'm not saying that the draft would be a good thing. But, if it happens...why can't people serve their country? This country was built on individual patriotism that dates back to the volunteers of the Revolutionary War. The last thing I want is to be at war with someone who doesn't want to be there and isn't willing to risk their life for those around them. The question isn't whether the draft is right or wrong...the question is why is everyone so afraid? Without our miltary...that coward with that IED could be walking down the street of your hometown or in the front door of your childrens school. It is our responsibilty as adults of this great nation to ensure that doesn't happen. I never said I agreed or disagreed with the current wars...but, I am a soldier, and I will go and do as I am told. I have been to Iraq and believe me, it isn't what the media makes it out to be. It is a sad situation.

First let me thank you for your service. I for one have nothing but respect for those who do a job I could not do.
I can't answer for everyone else as far as being afraid of the draft, but I can tell you that many people simply find it difficult to have to kill, even if it is to survive. However, I do agree that people should be willing to serve if drafted.
That said, I personally feel that having a military comprised of people who actually want to serve is far better than having one full of people who are there because they have to be.
I just want all those who scream and holler about the potential reintroduction of the draft to know that you would not have the right to scream and holler if no one was willing to serve.
Thank you again for your service, and here's hoping that there will come a day when such service is no longer needed.

As somebody who's currently in the military I can understand your point-of-view. However, the draft violates the very core of the freedom rights we, Americans, take for granted. Although, I'm not against the idea that I believe everyone should experience the military life for, at least, a couple years of their life, I don't believe that anybody should be subjected to a forceful hand. A lot of people have worked hard to acquire the lifestyle that they've become accustomed to. Whether it's wealth, power, or families. Some people have kids that they want to watch grow. Other's have good jobs and a reson to remain in their current life. I think the honor should lie whithin those not afraid to leave everything behind, in order to afford those who can't, or won't, the luxury to make that choice. Looking at it from their perspective, if I just got out of high school, started a new job, maybe got married; I have everything in my life going for me. The posibilities, the excitement, the independence. But, then I get drafted and sent to war, if something bad happens, that's it. Just like that, it's over. Not to mention that the people who don't want to be in the military run the risk of draining our economy by wasting our taxpayers dollars on services and administrative actions, due to the fact that those that don't want to be there, will do everything in their power to get out. We don't fight for our country. We fight for what's in it. I personally don't care about a bunch of dirt. Or, what our forefathers thought they created. I fight for the opportunities. For our families. So that, one day, when I have kids...they won't have to go to a foreign country and fight those that want to take that away from us. There's no honor in dying. The honor lies in the things that you do while you're still alive. The draft wouldn't benefit anyone. The military is not for everyone. I have great respect for those willing to put everything on the line to protect what we have. But I also have respect for those who stay behind and make it without the guiding hand of a political structure. Cause after all, if we all go into the military, who's living the life that we're dying to protect? With nothing to fight for, there's no reason to fight.

Perhaps because not everyone believes in war. While I appreciate the people that serve, I do not want to be sent to (or have a loved one sent) fight a war that I do not believe in. It is one thing to defend this country. It is a completely different issue when it is a war that never had to occur. Saddam Hussein was not a threat to the United States' freedom. If we are going to try to wipe out all evil in the world, then we need to start right here.

Simple question. If the us army (not the individuals, the whole) is so gallantly fighting for freedom, and winning then why conscript. id say being pulled from your personal life and being thrown into a potentially fatal warzone is a pretty big indicator for a lack of freedom. it would be a vicious circle. Its the governments job to entice those that are willing to fight into the army with tax dollars and to protect the rights and freedoms of those who dont. i admire what the military does on a personal level but certainly not from an administrational perspective.

Dear,
People are afraid of the draft, because we live in a country today that just hands out opportunities and the easy way out and people have taken advantage of the system and the system has slacked going after those doing just that

Absolutely....
It is easier for people to sit on the internet and complain.
'Dodging' won't be as easy as it once was.
Extradition treaties were signed in 2002-2003 to prevent that from happening. Canada and even Mexico, Britain, and France signed. Education will no longer be 'dodge' as this time around, they only get to finish out their semester. If they are within 12 months of graduation they can finish, however their GPA's will be monitored.

What freedoms are you talking about? The freedon to be sent off to a war that has no meaning and get killed by some coward behind a IED? Keep your freedom.

some people belief that this war has nothing to do with our own freedoms here in America and it would be sad to lose more lives in a war that some of us feel has nothing to do with us.
Bless your for believing in what you do and serving, but you must face that some of us don't think this is our war.
