See if it is working properly through the Device Manager:
cl Start
cl Settings
cl Control Panel
cl System
cl Device Manager
R-cl on the item to be checked. Click Properties.
That will tell you if the item is working properly.
To update the driver:
Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager
click the icon for the item you want
click the “update driver” button on the toolbar.

i had this problem the other day
if you just installed it on your computer then you need to restart.
if that doesn't work check the plugs in the back of the DVD rw.
if that doesn't work check the plugs on the motherboard.
then restart some more.....

try going to run programs with a cd in and run local disk/c it should detect then
