AFC means the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference.
Both used to be their own separate leagues until they merged in 1966 and formed the National Football League. It's also the reason that the first Super Bowl took place in 1967; it was the first time that the champions from each conference played each other for the "World Championship of Professional Football" (as it was called until it was renamed at the third championship).
Just thought I'd give you a little more info on it.

Okay the NFL is like the premier league it's like it's split in have into the AFC and NFC. AFC and NFC teams can play against each other. At the end of the season theres a tournement or the playoffs the top teams from both leagues face each other until it's one AFC and one NFC team then they face each other. The Jets are in the AFC and the giants are in the NFC and the giants are better.
