Click on Start, Settings, Printers & Faxes (Windows 98 & XP), then right click on your printer and select Properties. Then Printing Preferences. There should be several choices about print density and draft printing, etc. (My HP gave me a choice of fast draft, which is lighter, uses less ink and prints faster.) You may have to dig a little, but you should be able to choose a draft-type print which would be lighter.

Lasers seem to print at a finer resolution than inkjets.
Decide which look you want.
If you want the inkjet lighter, remove the bold.
If you want the laser darker, adjust the toner control.
