Is it a Yahoo account?

If it is, try to login as usual, enter your user ID. Below that there is a link for a forgotten password.

After correctly identifying yourself, you should be able to set a new password.

Suggest you keep a list of accounts and passwords in a safe place.

Web passwords are more than likely never going to be stored in your system's registry unless they are used by a program such as AOL instant messenger. The best ways to retrieve a password is to choose the "forgotten password" link or try passwords you use for other things, or maybe common passwords you believe you might have used. If all the above fails you can always just create a new email account.

Depending on the site you're talking about, there's usually a link on the login page that you can click on that will allow your password to be emailed to you. Even if you can't remember it or have cleared the password history, you should still be able to recover it that way, with the 'email password' link. If not, then just change it.
