Clearly free-market capitalism and a healthy respect for the free choices of individuals is a primary reason that the United States has become the greatest and most powerful country in human history.

Yet there are many who, though themselves benefiting massively from this, subscribe to a brainless anti-market, anti-capitalist fetish. Is it possible that these fetishists will gain enough power to cause the US to sink into stagnant mediocrity, much like Europe, thus ending humanity's era of innovation and advancement?

LOL! Nice joke Aussie. Actually here in the US people scarcely view Europe as any kind of competent competitor, and certainly no one is "scared" of Europe. I just can't tell you how comical that idea is. Thanks for the laugh.

I totally agree that there are a large number of people in this country that feel this way and it is very disturbing. I don't know if the country will get to the level of many European countries. God I hope not. I believe the public is a contributing factor in moving in this direction but congress is the bigger problem. The size of government today and increasing reliance on the "parent state" to provide for every thing anyone needs must stop. The move toward a welfare state that has been occuring of late is the real enemy of capitalism. After all, why would anyone work hard and participate in a free economy when Uncle Sam is right there to ensure necessities that people should be working to obtain.
Here is a link to a very powerful story about Congressman Davy Crockett and his belief in what the government should or should not provide. After reading this I ask myself how we got to the point we are at today. http://patriotpost.us/histdocs/crockett_not_yours_to_give.asp

Capitalism will always survive as long as there is someone who wants something more than someone else and is willing to pay for it.

Uncontrolled, unregulated markets fail and if government is not there to ease out those fluctations, instability will reign supreme and without some social safety nets the 'losers' in the great competitive game will not sit idly by and die quietly in the gutter.
That's the real thing that will destroy America or any other great country, internal strife and dissention. Hope it doesn't happen.
I don't like empires, but as far as empires go, USA probably one of the best.

As to 'humanity's era of innovation and advancement", it was occuring long before USA came into being and will continue long after our current political borders exist no more.

I've thought about the same thing. It annoys me in a way that obviously America's way of doing things is the best way... It's not perfect but the USA holds 30% of the world's GDP let the numbers and statistics defend America.

I guess that's the beauty of America but I'm not a big fan of insulting and proclaiming that there are much better ways...

Just my 2 cents...

Anti-capitalism will not destroy America---Unchecked capitalism and greed will destroy our country. Our continued export of industries, jobs, talent and tecknology will eventually catch up with us. We have an annual trade deficit of 800 billion dollars and a combined deficit approching 5 trillion dollars in the last 20 years. Foreign countries have used these dollars to buy many of our large companies, our natural resourses, and over 47 % of our national debt. We used to be a net producer and creditor to the world. Today, we are a net consumer and debtor to the world. Subsequently, America has grown weak and dependent upon foreigners for just about everything we consume.

We have sustained ourselves in the world economy through consumption and the American dollar. The American consumer may just be tapped out as indicated by the negative savings rate of 2005. As for the American dollar, Greenspan may have insured its decline through overproduction as is evidenced by our continued fear of inflation and the ongoing devaluation of the dollar. Fortunatey for us, the dollar is accepted as a reserve currency for the world. Many countries of the world are vested in the dollar. The question is how long will foreigners be content to finance the consumption habits of a non earning nation.

In conclusion, American anti-capitalism will not destroy us. Rather, our lax and unproductive mode in the face of a world that is rapidly embracing a protected capitalist mentality will eventually destroy us. Our government and our businesses nead to modify capitalism by placing the interests of her people first!

You must be residing on Mars, otherwise your question would sound different. Europe is our competitor, and is not sunk at all into stagnant mediocrity. Take a good look at the Euro versus the Dollar.

i doubt the destruction of america will have anything to do with the anti-capitalists.... and i doubt that we will live to see the end of "humanity's era of innovation and advancement" as that is what defines our species...
on a different note,
do you find it strange that each successive world power has been at the top for less time than the last one???
i.e.
egypt~4000 yrs
rome~800yrs
britain~400yrs
america~100yrs
???china???
