I want to know more about this car's history and how it was promoted while new. I also want auto reviews on how it lived up to its promotion today.

It was for it's day, top of the line...BMW was just starting to reach Benz's level of reliablity, luxury, and performance....the 300 was a solid car...some models had some electronic bugs but not as much as the 80's...modern cars are like that, though...all those computers and stuff...Mercedes Benz was still Daimler Benz..Not Daimler Chrysler...so the quality was more German than just put together for universial comsumption....it was the car that the young lawyer, doctor, or business exec drove...it was conservative but sporty....alot of these cars are still on the road to this day....as long as you maintain the mechanics..the car will run...these models don't even rust...I remember a friend of my cousin's had a 190E ..it was 1991 but the mechanics and design are similiar..just a smaller engine...it was a smooth riding car with luxurious seats...a good sound system...and it was'nt all modified..just some BBS rims and subwoofers in the trunk...I wish I owned it to this day
check google and yahoo for stories on it...I know that there are several retrospectives..Car & Driver, Automobile, Motortrend; etc...I've seen stories on 80's Benzes...the 560 and 190...so I know it can be found..good luck!

IMHO, the W140 is the finest road car on the market. It is a maintenance nightmare, But rides beautifully and handles well. I own a '92 300SD/S350 Diesel and for a car weighing just short of 5000 lbs I get 30 MPG on the road and could drive all day without stopping an still feel refreshed. It will go about 800 miles (to fuel exhaustion).
It has too many things which can go wrong (and usually does) so don't plan on saving any money while driving one of these fine cars.
It must be a pretty good car, that was what Princes Di was in when she was killed (and would have survived if she were wearing her seat belt)

I always try to promote the site www.mercedesshop.com
You will find lots of differeing opinions on the car, called the 140 chassis, at that site. If you did web searches for "mercedes W140" I'm sure you'll find some info.
