When an acquaintance of mine asked where I was the other day, I told her "I needed to watch a tv show, it was of dire consequence". She started to argue with me that I used the word consequence incorrectly. She said that watching a tv show might have been a dire situation, but not of dire consequence. Who was correct?

Consequences occur when you accumulate penalties for doing or not doing something. Watching a tv show would not bring about a penalty unless your parents grounded you from it. So, your girlfriend is right. Allthough I do not see how watching a tv show is a dire situation either. My advice, read a book and get off the tube.

Missing a TV show would be a disappointment. Having sex with someone that had an STD without a condom would lead to dire consequences.

The dire consequence of you watching the TV show would be to jeopardize the relationship with your girl friend. Dire is life threatening or health threatening. Consequence is the result of an action.
