Boxing day (the day after Christmas) is not about pugilism (boxing) but about re-gifting. A Canadian holiday at the least, often the well-to-do would regift presents for their hired help, or for the needy.

So basically it's taking presents and re-boxing them and giving them out again.

Boxing day was when the lords and ladies would put out the boxes from Christmas presents to be burnt and the maids and servants would go through them to find money they put in them for Christmas "bonuses".
