well, this have something to do with the history. the origin of malay language is from Sanskrit. During the ancient time, this language has been spread to Malaysia,Indonesia and Brunei. To cut a long story short. This language became more widely used when this king conquer this land, that island, and so forth. Since it is malay language is widely used, naturally it had be adopted by Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei government as their official language. On why Indonesian Malay language is slightly different from Malaysia and Brunei dialect is due to British and Dutch occupation. Brunei and Malaysia was under British then while Indonesia was under Dutch. As time goes by, some of the English words was adapted into Malay language (for Brunei and Malaysia) while in Indonesia, some of the Dutch language was adapted into it. that is how the Brunei and Malaysia have the same malay language while Indonesia have a slightly different malay language.
