The current answer accepted by most scientists is that humans evolved slowly (over the last 6 million years) from primate ancestors. These ancestors were not chimpanzees, nor any other living species of primate.
It's hard to know into what detail to go into without knowing more about how much science you already know. For example, do you know what "evolve" or "evolution" means? (I ask, because a lot of people *think* they know ... but they don't. It just means slow change of a species over time in response to environment.)
For a very complete description, see one of the following:
http://www.becominghuman.org/ (video documentary, very good)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/prehistoric_life/human/human_evolution/index.shtml
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_evolution (with many links at bottom)
http://www.mnh.si.edu/anthro/humanorigins/ha/sap.htm
And I highly recommend that you not accept or reject anything without a lot of reading. Science is a journey. You don't start out believing something, and then try to prove it ... it's more about learning and constanly reviewing what you believe.
But beware. The internet and the U.S. if FULL of people who will tell you lies about what the theory of evolution actually says. For example, if you heard somewhere that humans came from chimps, then that person either does not understand evolution AT ALL, or that person was deliberately lying to you about what the scientists actually believe (because NO scientist believes we came from chimpanzees).
Good luck!

religous fanatic answer:
From Adam and Eve. Science is bad. Don't listen to anything they have to say. The church knows all. The bible is unfaliable.
rationale answer:
Origins of man has been traced to primates. It is supported by a horde of research, evidence and data. If you are interested in learning more, I left a link below to a great page on the subject, from the Smithsonian Natural Museum of Natural History.

Ultimately, it is suspected that RNA is the beginning of "life". Everything began at molecular level. So, after RNA reverse transcribed to DNA and then form the double-stranded DNA, organisms start to grow.
It is believed that humans come from chimpanzees and these chims comes from something else that is smaller. This is a form of evolution stated by Darwin's theory.

Humans and chimpanzees evolved from a common proto hominid ancestor. Here is a web site that tells you about the man who came up with the theory of evolution by natural selection.

Also go to " evolution", at wikipedia and the attached links.

Read Genesis Chapters 1 and 2 for the truth. Otherwise you can believe The Lie of evolution. The choice is yours, but at least investigate ALL the evidence first.

Presumably, some advanced primates ( close kin to chimpanzees) were forced into a situation where they had to live on the ground rather than in trees, and had to develop their tool making and using abilities (chimps can use tools to a small extent) which placed a survival premium on intelligence...

no one knows for sure, you have to make your own decisions on that, either god or from apes are the two top answers, and they could be the same, we just dont know in this point in time.
