Travel From California City to Las Vegas on 12/30?

Need to drive from California City to Las Vegas late in the day on the 30th. Is I15 going to be as bad as they say in terms of trafic? Anybody have any experience bypassing that via smaller state roads north through Death Valley, and come into Vegas from the Northwest on I95?

I-15 is almost the only road from California to Las Vegas. Just leave earlier than you would otherwise, and pack a lot of patience.

Not a bad idea as I-15 is a linear parking lot.
