i am taking 28 day birth control pills, and my first month, i took three of the pills late on my THIRD WEEK of active pills. following the instructions, i continued to take the rest of the pills from the third week, and once I got to the fourth week (the inactive pills), i THREW THEM AWAY and started a new pack. i have just started the third week on my second pack, and have been taking every pill regularly and on time. after my missed pills, i waited a week before i started having unprotected sex again. starting around the middle of my first week on the new pack, i had some brown discharge, but no fresh blood. this continued until the middle of my second week on the new pack, when i started having fresh blood (i presume it is my period). i'm not totally sure what's going on. are my missed pills causing me to have a long period, and late? also, this question might be stupid, but can you get pregnant while taking the inactive pills in your pack (if you took all active ones correctly)?

It's normal for your period to change when you change birth control methods, dosage, etc, so don't worry about the brown vs. fresh blood - you may end up having a longer period than normal and then next month have a shorter period than normal, but it'll all balance out.

You should be protected after you finish your first full month. If you took all the active pills correctly, you should be fine.

Ask your Gyn about the missed pills.

I do know that you cannot get pregnant during the inactive pills (what I call "the period row") if you take the other pills correctly.

you should never miss pills it will set your body totally off balance. i made that mistake when i first started taking them and i had two periods one months and no period for 50 days the next. just take them like your supposed to and you'll be fine set an alarm on your cell or something. your discharge was probably just spotting. its very unlikely that you got pregnant.
