If it does build character, what character does it build?

I would say that it does. It builds responsibility, respect, confidence, and ability to work as a team. I think that being an athlete, especially starting at the student athlete level is great. It helps you gain respect from peers as well as to learn to respect your peers. I also think that it makes you feel good in knowing you are participating in a sport and teamwork which is very important is learned just through playing and also you make a bond with the entire team. I think that any team sport that you play builds up character.

It depends on your coach. A good coach will bring out the best from each player in terms of character, honor, integrity, sportsmanship and will demand it from the players. A bad coach (doesn't mean he won't have a winning team) allows players to develop into little more than thugs with basketball skills.

Maybe not so much the game itself, but learning teamwork and integrity in any sport.

Of course, if you get in with the 'wrong' crowd playing basketball, which is possible in any activity, you may lose character...
