It seems that every little child likes to draw.
They do it without being taught, in fact.
Why?
Drawing is playing.
Its fun.
About the time that children are taught to write is when the fun begins to dim for some kids.
Making your letters "just right" is important but kids are also learning that maybe their art isn't as "right" as it could be.
Perhaps that's the reason many adults say they can't draw. Maybe they mean they can't draw "right".
Those who continue to draw despite the rightness of their letters have a chance to continue to enjoy the fun of drawing.
The rest seem to do it less often. It's no longer fun. Who likes to be judged?
Especially when you're just trying to have fun?

Artists draw because it requires focusing on the details of the subject. We may look at a person, statue, or scene and think we see it, but when a pen, pencil or brush is taken to paper, the act of controlling our muscles and developing our eye-hand coordination brings insight as to details such as how the eye of a person blends into the cheek and nose. We can compare the drawing to the original to see where we are mistaken.
An engineer or artist will draw to get down ideas about a project and do variations on a project at low cost. Just seeing the form on paper may suggest alterations. An engineer may see questions of clearance or fit while an artist may realize that the drawing suggests but the only way to see the idea is to get out some clay and make a 3D version.
And overwhelmingly, besides the fun reasons given by others, drawing can be done any time and any place. A folded piece of paper and a pen or pencil can function where a computer or lump of clay would be impossible. A moderate drawing pad in a purse or shoulder bag and a couple of pencils can provide a very nice textured drawing surface for high quality work. Look into any major artist of the paste and you will normally find examples of notebooks with drawings in them.
Leonardo da Vinci's drawings of anatomy, engineering and art are awesome. (Ref.1) Museums often show open notebooks of the artists being displayed and may have many holdings. (ref. 2)

Since the beginning of mankind on this Earth,we've used drawings as not only a form of recreation but as a way to record events. Storytellers would describe important historical events in their tribes or decribe their religious beliefs thru drawings as well.

I draw to communicate what I cannot put into words, to express myself.
Drawing is GREAT!
Everyone can draw - it's a form of self expression - and it cannot be wrong. If you drew it and it feels right, then it's right.
I draw to sort through various emotions and stressors. It's how I deal.

God is our Father and He was drawing long before we came into existance. In many ways we are like Him. We came from Him and was made by Him. Any wonder why we do the things we do?
He is a wonderful artist. Shouldn't some of us be ?

Because drawing is part of being human (drawing in children is often discouraged by others by their criticism or by ours). What do we do in life beyond eating and sleeping, beyond taking care of the necessities? We seek pleasure, we seek to communicate to others, we seek to express ourselves, we seek to accomplish things, like the person who wins an Olympic gold metal.
However, the question that begins with "Why..." is ultimately unanswerable, and certainly not perfectly. In other words, Who knows? "Why" always points to mystery.
Why we do things is a mystery--like why we need to communicate with each other as persons.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? Why or how could you not know the answer to your ? They like to, for many reasons. Yes, for plenty of reasons. And yes again, for an enormous amount of positive reasons as well as negative. Pleasure, release, escape, love. expression, thoughts, artistically capable plenty of more positive adjectives & nouns to explain why. Haven't you ever drawn or doodled? You will be suprised at yourself at times what comes out on paper that the mind and hand can do with out putting a true thought or any type of effort into it. Try it you might like it!

People draw because it gives them pleasure and relieves stress. Others draw for money.
I am a big fan of artists. Especially my husband.

To express personal thoughts/emotions. To communicate feelings. To pass time.
Of course it's good! Not everyone is good at it, however.
