What purpose does is do for the lion, if any at all?

The lion's mane is used for finding a mate, but when it is reddish, it has less a chance. It has more of a chance of finding a mate when the mane is darker, meaning it is young, healthy and free of parasites, but when I tell you I'm only 10 years old you'll probabaly won't believe me.

It is a status symbol, similar to a peacock's tail.

It tells a female lion that he is so good at hunting that he has energy to waste on growing something ornamental, without real purpose.

It tells male lions that he is strong and healthy and would probably be a tough opponent if they were to try and take over his pride.

. so it doesn't look like a female...lol... the male of all animal species have the brightest or biggest feathers, manes, horns , etc..to atract the ladies
