Does the new Ipod shuffle require Itunes?

Can I upload songs just by copying and pasting mp3's into the drive shown on my computer in windows? Or do I need the itunes software to get music to my shuffle?

Yes, all iPods need iTunes to get music to the shuffle, as in being able to hit the play button and hear your music.
You can use it as a removable drive for music / video / files, but you can't see / hear it on the shuffle.

I am assuming that the shuffle is the same as the nano....yes you have to have iTunes. We tried to do it directly from media player but it wouldn't work. We then downloaded iTunes and it worked perfectly.
