Thousands?? Hmmm that sounds like a bit of an exaggeration.
Anyway, on to your question. I really don't know. I think the mother should get the birthday card--after all she is the one that did all the work that day.

Well the reason I send a card or gift to a person is so they realize I haven't forgotten about them and acknowledge their B-Day. (Especially if it is a Realtive) I usually only give gifts to my close friends and Relatives. I only usually send cards to casual friends.

cards are an inexpensive but thoughtful way to say "hey I remembered you today" because of you this is not "just another" day.
