The 70's. The fall of the studio system and the rise of the auteur lead to the birth of some great movie makers:
Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Martn Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, William Friedkin, Sam Peckinpah, Terrence Malick, Peter Bogdanovich, Stanley Kubrick, Brian De Palma, John Carpenter, David Lynch, Woody Allen, and Ridley Scott to name a few. Not to mention some of the greats from earlier who were still making movies (Like Hitchcock, Bergman and Fellini. Or someone like Werner Herzog who started making movies in the 60's)
Now that I think about it, it doesn't even seem close...

As much as I like movies from the 40s, I have to say the 90's have my favorite movies.

I agree that the 30' and 40's had some great movies.
But I like movies from all eras.
Good thing I work for a cable company and all my movies channels are free.

I'm with you! The 30s and 40s are the best.
Garland, Crawford, E G Robinson, de Havilland, Shearer... I could go on and on. If it's not B&W or Technicolor, I don't watch it.
