Put a bucket under the oil pan at the bottom of the engine. Loosen the 5/8th inch bolt in the bottom of the oil pan and let the oil drain out.
Using a filter wrench, remove the oil filter. Lubricate the gasket on a new filter and put it on, just a quarter turn past hand tight.
Replace the oil pan bolt. Be careful not to strip it.
Pour 5 quarts of oil in. Start the car and check for leaks. Check the dipstick and add additional oil if necessary.

First of all, it is not a nut or a bolt. It is an oil pan plug. The Ford one ton truck I had did not have a canister oil filter. It had what was called a sock filter, which was nothing more but a hand full of short cotton fibers that you packed down into the filter. You should also fill the filter with new oil before replacing the cap.
Oh, I forgot. You also have to suck out the oil in the filter housing and then clean it with a rag. You'll get your hands dirty. The filter on my engine was not designed for the more modern replaceable elements. I suppose you could use the sock element, but we always used the bulk element material.

Pull the plug and drain the oil out. Find the fill cap and put oil in until dipstick reads full. Locate the filter element it will probably look like a regular oil filter but carefully remove because it could be a canister style with element inside and you will ave to re use the canister. I would change the filter first. then drain all oil and refill.

Sorry Stuart you are mistaken . Flathead Fords do not have a screw on oil filter.
It has a large drain plug on the oil pan. The filter is a cartridge type mounted on top of the motor. Take off the cover and lift out the filter.

i own a shop,and this one has a canister type filter on it,,first you need to drain all the oil from the oil pan,,and the loosen the 5/8 bolt that holds the canister up there and get ready to catch it all, clean it all real good,and then use a new canister in it,,also use a new o-ring gasket,,and care fully tighten the bolt up real good ,fill it,,start it,and check for leaks,,that's about it,,i had one of these things a few years ago,it actually ran pretty good to be an old truck,,good luck,,hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

remove the plug from the oil pan and drain too change the filter unscrew the bolt on the oil filter housing and remove the cartrage and install a new filter and fill with oil befor reinstalling install drain plug in oil pan and fill crankcase with oil run and check for leaks.this is how i would do it if i had a 50 FORD

flat heads dont have an oil filtering system. to chang the oil u jus loosen the nut on the bottom of the oil pan,take the nut off and let it drain the when its done put the nut back on and put new oil in

If it runs great with no leaks, straight 30 weight. if she leaks a little bit and it doesn't get too cold where you live (under 20*) then go 10-40, or straight 40. Keep her going!
