When we were little, to curb our excited impatience, our parents let us open one gift each as long as it wasn't from them. But we opened everything else, one person at a time, on Christmas morning. That was so that she could keep track of the thank you letters we owed, as we had alot of mailed presents. Now, we've raised our son with fewer mailed-in presents, and as adults we do it with no mailed in presents, just to enjoy each person's presents more fully, and keep things relaxed; and snack, etc. We each get a total of about 10 gifts, so we're ready to go our separate ways (back to bed! or to a special breakfast) for awhile when we're done. My first husband's family did all the opening on Christmas Eve which left Christmas Day kind of empty.
