Diesel is higher priced than gasoline because of government regulations. It takes a lot of work to get the sulfur out.

Even regular diesel is cheaper than petrol (gasoline) but the gov't taxes it a lot since it has a lot of particulate and sulfur. The new diesel should not be subject to this tax penalty and should be much cheaper. In Germany, regular gas is 1.25 Euro/liter. (That's like $7.50 a gallon by the way!!) and diesel is 1.09. I expect that ratio will be the same here for low-sulfur vs unleaded gas.

I assume you mean why rather than what. It's because of the extra steps in refining diesel of that needed quality. Early reports are that it is causing a drop in fuel economy and mechanical problems with both injectors and pumps.
