I asked this same question to a friend who is a firefighter not too long ago, and he said it's always best to turn it off because of fire safety reasons. He told me that he has been to several fires over the years that were started by Christmas trees catching on fire.

I know I'm an "old-timer", but I was raised using real trees as Christmas trees, and my dad emphasized always keeping water in the bowl for your tree to absorb, and even then, the tree, if it's a real one, can dry out and become a fire hazzard, and if it overheats due to your lights (and it doesn't take much heat to do that) you can EASILY have a very big fire VERY QUICKLY, and it can destroy whatever abode you and maybe your family live in, so, it depends on what risks you're willing to take, but I would NEVER be willing to risk my or my family's well being and lives on however "cute" it may be to leave the lights on. Again, I know I'm an "old-timer" relative to a lot of people who answer on Yahoo, but I'd say NEVER to leave your Christmas tree lights on without someone awake to watch over the tree, and keep it well watered. And, honey, fake trees go up in flames just as fast as real ones, so my answer is still NO, if you love yourself and your family. God Bless you, and yours.

I'm too paranoid to do that. So I say no, don't leave it on.

Maybe because when I was in the 6th grade I lost a dear school friend (David Whitaker) in a fire that was caused/originated with their Christmas tree. He ran back in the house to try to save his little sister and when the firemen found them both they were dead from smoke inhalation, huddled up together on the floor of his sisters bedroom by her bed. So pitiful and heartwrenching.

I would get up a couple hours before you think everyone will start waking up and then plug it in/turn it on.

If you are talking about lights I do not think that you should leave them on all night otherwise it could cause a fire.
