We are the dominant species, because God(whatever view you may have him, anthropomorphic or otherwise) made us that way. We have the ability to use logic and come to conclusions while animals do not, for the most part.
As for how it happened, it is my opinion that it was definitely not by chance. After all everything fits so well and has existed for so long, it is impossible for it to work out so well without a little help.
To have higher thought, we obviously have to have something to compare it to right? Well, i believe that that is God's knowledge. He is all-knowing and we are all capable of gaining that higher thought if we seek for it through education. It is already instilled within us but because of a "veil" between us and God when we were born, we have "forgotten" a lot of what we knew.
Your purpose is to live the good life, make a difference for the good, for the benefit of others. Learn patience and be tested to see how well we do in this life.

We are here because our species tends to thrive in this particular environment. I don't really think we are a "dominant" species. Insects are far more prolific.

What is "higher thought"?

As a species, we don't really have a purpose... but we can make our individual lives more meaningful if we "follow our bliss" as Joseph Campbell said.

The answer lies in finding out how big or small we really are. Yes, when compared to other species on earth we know of, we look like the most intelligent and high thinking one. But then is that not too little a sample to check against? This universe is s...o very vast and varied that we neither know its size nor its contents ....... whatever we know may well be near equivalent of zero.

I believe that we are too small and minuscule to have by any stretch of imagination anything significant or grand purpose to fulfill. We should blissfully accept our small role and see to it that we do not harm or hurt anyone or any other being by our haughty demeanor and actions. We are unable to even do that..... where is the case for assuming any significant role in this great diverse universe?

A question that cannot find an answer. It is the play of Nature that We are here to continue the specie. It is the law of Nature that only the fittest will survive. There is no purpose in Life except to survive, procreate and die. This cycle continues for every living being.

Intellect is what makes human the GOD's best creation on earth.

The purpose of human existence is a test of one's faith and soul.
And we go through this test each day every moment that we live.

At every step forward in our life journey, we are confronted with situation that has 2 choices. And apparently one of them offers higher satisfaction, is easier to accept while other demands sacrifice, Difficult to believe and follow(test of Faith).

It is our judgement in each situation that will go on to decide whether we fulfilled our purpose of existence.
