Age old question.

When you are the older one and see the risk more clearly, have to honestly look back and remember when someone thought this same thing at one time about you.

When young, feel you can take on the world for just know something risky/bad will happen to someone else -afterall.

It is called life - assuming we are in control!

Scientifically, Teenagers Spend more time assessing Risk, about 3.5 seconds more then Adults. However they often chose risky behavior over Safe for acceptance. Teens want to be part of the Group and if that means Drinking, Smoking, or other Risky activities, They know, but don't care about the Repercussions.

People at that age feel invincible, normally they have little recognition of the consequences of their actions because they have yet to be held responsible for them. They are impressionable and will risk doing things to be popular, noticed or part of a group. They are also longing to create an individual personality and doing risky things , in their mind, is an individualizing activity.

I'm a teenager and I've done some crazy stupid stuff. Mostly because teens are SOOO bored. Like in small towns, there's nothing to do. So we amuse our stuff by doing illegal things, also we like to try new things. A lot of other people do it do to peer pressure, which I have fallen under before. But most of it is boredum.

Scientifically speaking-

Because, as teenagers mature, hormones that control emotion and rationalization become either extremely high or extremely low. This is what cause them to really feel massive, almost bi-polar, changes in attitude.

Psychologically Speaking-

Because teenagers are always looking for acceptance from their peers (as is human nature), so they will risk their own lives to gain acceptance.

They want to see where the "limit" is. They want to look over the edge. You cannot see the edge of existence from not living. They need to know "what will happen". Only after they "know", they will build up repeated patterns of apathy and boring adulthood.

Or it could be that they are stoned.

Acceptance by their group ! But it's good to let them explore and find out what risks and danger means, by their own experience.
