The keyboard on my laptop got some problems. Is there anyway you could connect a desktop keyboard to a laptop so I can use it instead of buying a new laptop? What do I need to do that?

I used to always do this when I was working on mine at home.
It would allow me to use the numeric (10-key) pad for entering data (I'm more comfortable with the keypad than the string of numbers above the keyboard.
I would also connect it to a stand-alone monitor as it is bigger than the laptop screen.

So, YES.
However, you laptop must have the the available connection to attach your keyboard. Your laptop probably will have a ps2 and a usb connection and should therefore accommodate whatever your keyboard has.
It will make your computing so much easier if you also attach your mouse.

In response to davedave's response, not all laptops have PS/2 ports.

You know in my days we didn't have Yahoo and the Internet barely existed. We did what was called trying a theory.

People today are way too lazy.

Some laptops include the option for a docking station. Generally replacing a laptop keyboard is not that difficult, just a few screws. But you have to be careful about the ribbon cables. Of course you have to find a place to buy the keyboard and you have to know the pat number.

A docking station normally includes PS/2 ports and also allows a USB keyboard to be used. Try a keyboard on the USB port of your laptop and see if it works.

This is why I buy IBM/Lenovo.I can get parts and services manuals anytime from the website.

It's ok to use an extended keyboard for the laptop, me to i use them. You can buy them with a cable for about $20 . If you're in the shop look on the box for it's connection, they are sold with usb cord or with ps2, and the ps2 connection is for the older types. Better to look first your laptop has a ps2 port otherwise buy the usb 2.0 connector. When you come home first startup the laptop, when it's running plug in the usbcord and you can start typing. You can also buy wireless keyboard but i don't see the use of that , wireless is ok for the mouse but for a keyboard ? it doesn't move so... Also this: if you spill water on the laptops keyboard it's a disaster, but now when you spill water on the extended keyboard? for $20 you buy a new one. good luck.

USB or PS2 keyboard will do. Or if you have serial connection then you can get an adapter to fit.
