Iconic to America would have to be "home cooking",
like fried chicken, barbecue ribs, cole slaw, collard greens, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn on the cob, sliced tomatoes, macaroni and cheese and biscuits.

Hamburgers make me think american, apple pie does too even though I think that originated elsewhere...like France. But, it still seems american.
