Yes, but don't tell anyone that I said that.

If we did what you suggest we do the geo-political situation down the road would be far worse for the U.S. Historically, it is very hard to maintain imperial status, because the world and alliances are constantly changing. Capital that was once in a nation’s budget is no longer there, and the next thing you know; you can’t afford to maintain the empire. Empires, like it or not, come and go, rise and fall. Unfortunately, America will be no different, especially considering the fact that Democrats and Republicans have not had any interests in confronting the challenges of globalization.
In the near future, say within the next fifty years, America will still be a superpower with a huge economy, but it will not match China’s economy. All estimates place the Chinese economy at a value of about thirteen trillion dollars more than what the U.S. economy will be in 2035, which for comparison purposes, is the total net worth of the U.S. economy currently. India will come in third; about ten trillion dollars short of matching the U.S. economy. Fortunately, India is a democracy. If we were to subjugate Afghanis and Iraqis to involuntary American rule, they would come to quickly despise us. Opinion of America in Afghanistan has changed dramatically since the U.S. liberated them from the Taliban and installed a democracy. They have a ratified constitution, an elected Prime Minister, and a fully elected Parliament. The Taliban have been irreparably damaged and the country is under the protection of NATO, the largest military alliance in history. Afghanistan is also an Islamic Republic; this showed them that America had no interests in controlling them, and it changed opinion in the country for the better.
In the future America will rely on friendship to confront the challenges of a communist superpower that may, albeit hopefully won’t, but may turn out to be as aggressive as the Soviet Union was. If opinion of America is bad in the mid east; China will capitalize on it.

I hear you clucking big chicken. It does seem that we do invest billions of dollars to rebuild the infrastructure of countries after they are destroyed by war. We do seem to leave them in better and with up to date technologies.

Interesting idea, but the world has past that stage. If it were a hundred years ago than yes, make them commonwealths, but today it would not work.

Before we consider that, we should wait for Turkey to be admitted to the European Union, and we should watch that for 10 years to see how it works out.
