If you're so lucky to have a loving partner, go have sex!
Otherwise, kill some time on here, read a book, drink a bottle of wine, and fall asleep in front of the tv.
Maybe try writing if you're so inclined. Emptying my mind on paper helps me relax.

Indeed I do, Jane. Read a book. That will almost always work.
If you're already tired, your eyes should begin to get very heavy after reading a while. Don't try to go to sleep until your body wants to sleep.
Also, before you get into bed, wind down by sitting in an easy chair or relaxing a bit by looking at some television or something easy.
Establish a routine if possible. I think a very small drink of juice at your bedside also helps somehow.
Sometimes it is too quite to sleep! Turn on a fan and face it the other way maybe, if its too cold. If its too noisy to sleep, from traffic or something, get some ear muffs- thats kind of a personal preferance abbout silence- same with light.

My suggestion is a mixture called Calmax; which is simply calcium, magnesium with vitamin C. It is made up into a drink by pouring boiling water and mixing; it can be taken (when cooled!) by itself (not too unpleasant) or with fruit juice cordial, etc. It completely relaxes all the muscles and induces natural relaxation, and is a godsend for getting good sleeps.
My husband and I use it all the time; it's a winner (we get it at the local health food shop)
Good luck (by the way; this preparation works so well as it is absorbed IMMEDIATELY.)

Lay off all caffiene drinks past 6 p.m. , do not excersice or walk 2 hours before bedtime, if you smoke stop about an hour before bedtime. Sometimes our minds will just not shut off and I think everyone has a bout of this at some point. I had one that lasted a week once. I finially took a double dose of benedryl 25 mg tablets and that put me to sleep.

What works for me is to exercise for about 15 m,minutes, (deep knee bends to loosen up the circulation in your legs, maybe walk around a bit.
Don't drink anything with caffeine with-in 3 hours of sleep time.
Take a common aspirin if you have to. After going to bed take about 20 deep breaths and relax with a good book for about 10 minutes or so.
If you are full of caffine the asprin will help
if you have a good 8 hours you can sleep than a table spoon of vicks nighttime will help. But it will make you drousy, and out of sorts the next day unless you sleep late of have at least 8 hours to get it out of your system.

increase your cardiovascular activity; do some quick brisk jogging which makes you sweat. the extra feel good hormones (endorphins) released and charging through your system will enable you sleep right after the jog. as soon as you have showered, put on the lightest of night clothing, make your bed with fresh crisp clean sheets and lie in it and i assure you'll be out like a light in no time with the soundest of sleep, and you wake up very refreshed.

yah insomnia sucks, i know.
look up a list of foods with tryptophan in them,
such as milk, cheese and turkey.
don't take naps during the day.
practice some meditation type techniques to help quiet your mind.
if you can't sleep, at least get up and do something useful with your time.
exercise before you go to bed.
if all else fails do what i do and smoke a huge joint at about 8 o'clock.
hah. j/k.
good luck.

Reading your Bible and prayer. There is a verse that has often helped me to get to sleep and stay asleep - "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you, O Lord, make me dwell in safety".
Also, setting is important - no tv or loud noises. Soft soothing music or one of those sound machines. Lights off. Nice, hot Chamomile tea.

This works for me. If I have trouble getting off to sleep, I try to stay awake instead. Focus on keeping your eyes open and you will be surprised
at how sleepy you soon become. Weird but it works.
