It's definately a reality check. Makes you feel older for one thing. Makes you want to protect them from some of the hurt that you know will come with intimate relationships. And makes you feel sort of helpless, because you know that your children are old enough to make their own decisions without your input or advice. All-in-all, not a good time for parents.

Fortunately, I haven't had to face this yet ... but it probably won't be long before reality smacks me in the head as I have 14 and 16 yr old girls. I had a dream that my 14 yr old told me that she wasn't a virgin and I literally beat the tar out of her I was so mad! I told her about the dream and told her it was a warning. I am upfront about sex and will answer any questions they have and will talk about it openly with them. I don't lie about my own experience. I was 22 when I gave up the ghost. On the flip side, my sister was only 14. So, I think it helps for them to know that you will gain more understanding as you mature and will have less regrets to think before you act. As I've told them, there were several circumstances where I could have gone all the way, but it's always within a woman's inner strength to stop and think.

Pretty much a conversation indicating that I knew... and followed that up with a discussion of birth control (the pill) and safe sex (condoms).
Keeping a bowl of condoms that is refilled periodically, and easily accessible without being seen by others seems to work well.
You know they're going to do it... so being supportive of their sexuality, and sexual learning in a safe environment seemed to be the best option...
No condom counting, regular refills... in the bathroom seems to work best... and keeping the lines of communication open.
Talking about my experiences to encourage sharing on their part...
We can't change that they grow up... but we can help them avoid catching nasties, being safe...

i Will be a virgin till marriage but both of my older sisters lost their virginity at like 15 and my parents did not care, after all they had the three of us when they were hippies and b4 marriage so they cannot judge! my bro was the only one on purpose and only one after marriage and only boy haha! now they are both extremely successful infectious disease doctors so it shows it is not that big a deal but i like the idea of giving my virginity to a special person whom i marry!

Dear Lesley
What's done cannot be undone. I will ask my children whether is he/she is serious with the relationship. If not, then will advise him/her to stop the relationship and learn thru this lesson.
