Use your gut instincts and listen to your heart and head, if something doesn't add up- call a person on something they have done and if they don't get back to you in a constructive matter, that will tell you right there- I had that happen all too much. Also, there are some false things said about the physical attributes of lying, psychopathic behavior is one of them because they do one thing and say another. All in all if something is gnawing at you and deriving you from your positive energies, it's not worth the gamble to your mental health. That's the story of my life, and I can never get an answer as to how people know someone is lying over the Internet, especially open communities such as this, one just never knows- you need to be on your guard at all times.

You cant if they are a good lier. But often speech pitch and rate changes, as does eye contact, the number of "um"'s and "ah"'s the person says, and shifts in body position and nervous twitches.

When people are lying, they avoid looking directly into the eyes of the person they’re lying to. They fix their gaze on something else in the room, and they allow themselves to become distracted easily. Sometimes people make an effort to look others in the eye because they know others may be aware of the methods to detect a liar.

Those who are lying tend to touch their faces when speaking. When people are lying they sometimes touch their nose, mouth, chin, and hair. Touching the face or hair is a sign of nervousness, and it’s a lame attempt to draw attention away from the lies being told. This is one form of a diversion.

When someone is approached with an uncomfortable topic, and when someone has lied in an attempt to avoid trouble, they sometimes abruptly change the subject. They will completely turn the topic around in an effort to distract the person speaking to them.

1. Their eyes cast down when they lie.

2. They add too much.

3. Nervous laughter.

4. They feign ignorance about something you know they know.

5. They take charge of the conversation to distract/divert you.

6. They play on your friendship: asking you to just trust them,

7. You sense that something is off; any clue will do.

8. You find YOUR eyes squinting and your head angling several degrees.

9. When you ask for an explanation/clarification, there's a momentary gap while they conjure up something.

10. Explanations are given, that, while plausible, aren't good enough for YOU.

You can tell someone is lying if they scratch their face, are looking down and not making eye contact and if they giggle or smirk.

One way is if they can't look you in the eye while they are telling what ever it is. Another way is to see if they blink a lot while talking. Sorry to say that you can't really tell if they are very good liars. Not without a polygraph or something.

Shift in the size of the pupil.
Won't maintain eye contact.
Sweating at the temples.
Possible stammering.

My sister and mother smile a little when you stare at them, My brother stutters, and my other sister won't look me in the eye. If you know someone well enough you can tell when they lie.
