If you are a self-learner you could purchase a good instructions book or DVD and knit away.

Once you get the basics down, you'll be knitting in no time.

You can learn to knit for free from web site. She has posted instructional videos including a project for beginners. The nice thing about videos is you can see the movement of the needles and yarn. You can't get that from illustrations.

They have video instructions on the internet that teach you. I learned from that and I knitted my sister a scarf and it looks really good!

You may also want to try the Chicago Park District.
They offer all kinds of classes.

If you attend church ask some of the older ladies I am sure some of them would teach you for free.
